The Creighton University School of Medicine – Phoenix residency program in psychiatry is ready to welcome you to the Southwest.
Our three-year residency program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Currently, our program recruits for six (6) positions each year.
Our Philosophy
The mission of the Creighton University School of Medicine - Phoenix Psychiatry Residency Program is two-fold:
- Provide a nurturing environment for our residents' professional and personal growth
- Train them to become outstanding clinicians and teachers, who not only find fulfillment in working with the underserved patient population but who will make meaningful contributions in the field.
The program’s biggest asset is our residents and diverse faculty who create an enriching learning environment. Our residents are engaged in various committees and are proactive in their training. We have an extensive didactic program that is broad-based and updated regularly based on the resident's feedback, training needs and interests.
Our faculty members have an open-door policy, provide ample supervision, and are actively involved in the growth and development of the residents. The program has an ongoing collaboration with various treatment facilities in the community that enables our residents to customize their training in a variety of different clinical settings beyond the basic structure of the residency, further broadening their experience.
We are a community care focused program whose mission is to create a learning environment for our residents that fosters their growth as physicians, teachers and leaders who will become the next generation of psychiatrists to promote the care of the mental health of all populations including the underserved. This is in keeping with our sponsoring institutions core values of service to others, the inalienable worth of each individual, and appreciation of ethnic and cultural diversity.
The Phoenix Psychiatry Residency Program aims to:
- Produce skilled surgeons who can operate independently in a variety of settings, with special focus on offering patients appropriate minimally invasive approaches to hysterectomy and other gynecologic surgeries.
- Produce physicians who understand that quality improvement (QI) and patient safety (PS) are an integral part of healthcare delivery and can thus be physician leaders in improving patient outcomes.
- Produce physician advocates for women’s healthcare at local, state, national, and international levels. Our residents will attend didactics on the role of professional organizations in healthcare advocacy. Opportunities for deeper involvement in advocacy through local, regional and national organizations will be offered.
- Produce physicians who understand that one of the responsibilities of physicians is to contribute to the field of Ob/Gyn through scholarly activity, specifically through the products of peer reviewed manuscripts, presentations, and curricula.
- Produce physicians who appreciate healthcare disparities and possess the understanding of the obligation to reduce them.
Educate residents and fellows in a healthy, supportive learning environment that supports physician wellness. The Creighton Jesuit value of cura personalis (meaning, care for the whole person) will be paramount in our residency.
The Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance
In 2017, Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center (SJHMC), Creighton University (CUSOM), Valleywise Health, and District Medical Group (DMG) joined forces to form the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance. The Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance supports Creighton University School of Medicine - Phoenix Graduate Medical Education by providing strategic, financial and operational resources.
