The Phoenix Internal Medicine Program cultivates an environment of inquiry and collaboration where physicians at all stages of their careers can maximize their personal and professional growth in the challenging discipline of internal medicine. This is achieved via a rigorous program of clinical rotations, scholarly activity, didactic conferences, web-based learning modules, and a flexible, wide-ranged set of electives.

Residents treat a wide variety of pathology and provide care to a diverse population of patients both at St. Joseph’s Hospital and at Valleywise Health Medical Center. Our residents boast one of the highest board pass rates in Arizona and are highly successful in obtaining desirable jobs and fellowships upon graduation.

The Internal Medicine Residency Program is known for its collegial, collaborative environment, where residents, students, faculty and interprofessional team members work together to optimize patient care. In addition, the program is deeply committed to caring for underserved communities and vulnerable populations.

Through rotations at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, Valleywise Health and the St. Vincent de Paul Clinic, community outreach such as the CATCH home visit program, and other activities, residents continue the program’s long tradition of compassionate care and community service.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Internal Medicine Residency Program is to train compassionate and clinically outstanding physicians who:

  1. Provide the highest quality, evidence-based, patient-centered care;
  2. Advance the practice of medicine through excellence in patient care, education, research, and quality improvement;
  3. Lead the nation in changing healthcare to meet the needs of the population, with special attention to the underserved.

Our program aims to:

  1. Train our residents to be well-rounded physicians who provide patient-centered care, with an emphasis on caring for the underserved, to optimize health outcomes in our patient population and make a difference in patients’ lives.
  2. Provide a collegial and supportive learning environment that promotes resident and faculty wellness.
  3. Provide residents with experience in treating a diverse range of patients and pathology.
  4. Engage residents and faculty together in advancing research, promoting quality improvement and patient safety, and conducting scholarly activity leading to publication and/or presentation at a regional or national level.
  5. Adapt education to changes in the healthcare environment by using innovative teaching methods and responding to feedback from key stakeholders to optimally prepare trainees for independent practice.
  6. Foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for residents, faculty, staff, and the community. In particular, the program strives to recruit and support residents and faculty from groups that are underrepresented in medicine.
