Joel Barkley, MD, FACOG

Associate Program Director

Dr. Barkley is a practicing obstetrician-gynecologist and the associate residency program director in Phoenix, Arizona. He is also the co-director of the Creighton Ob/Gyn Women's Imaging Fellowship. He graduated Creighton University School of Medicine 2010 and completed his residency training at the Phoenix Integrated Residency Program in Ob-Gyn (PIROG) in 2014. He also completed a one-year fellowship in Women's Imaging at Maricopa Integrated Health System. He is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and maintains an Ob/Gyn certification with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.

Dr. Barkley's interests are in academics, research, and gynecologic ultrasound. He is a recipient of the CREOG National Faculty Award and multiple local teaching awards. He has been the principal investigator for translational studies to improve ultrasound cancer diagnostics and biomarker detection. He has helped design and instruct simulation courses to teach core concepts in obstetrics and gynecology for the University of Arizona. Dr. Barkley is also a certified member and the site principal investigator for the International Ovarian Tumor Analysis group.

Dr. Barkley specializes in ovarian tumor (cyst) risk assessment using transvaginal ultrasound. His specialty ultrasound clinic also offers ultrasound guided IUD removals, saline contrast ultrasound, and tubal patency assessment with HyCoSy (hysterosalpigo-contrast-sonography). His practice in general obstetrics and gynecology includes treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, fibroids, and complicated pregnancies. He offers minimally invasive surgical approaches such as vaginal and laparoscopic hysterectomy, hysteroscopy, and endometrial ablation.
