Shaghayegh “Shushu” Abdollahi, MD, was named the 2020 Internist of the Year by the Arizona chapter of the American College of Physicians. She received the award in December. It recognizes those who have exhibited an exemplary record in patient care and dedication to the practice of Internal Medicine.
She was chosen by a committee made up of Internal Medicine physicians from throughout the state.
Abdollahi is the associate program director for the Creighton Alliance Internal Medicine Residency program and the medical director at Valleywise Community Health Center in Laveen. She also is a faculty member at Creighton University School of Medicine – Phoenix and the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix.
In addition to teaching and mentoring students and residents, she was involved in increasing ambulatory care rotations and expanding staffing at Valleywise Health’s South-Central Family Health Center.
In the nomination letter, she was lauded as an “example of what it means to be called a physician, a leader, mentor, teacher, colleague, innovator, and, most of all, a humanistic compassionate person.”
